Are there benefits to spaying my cat?

Valley Veterinary Care recommends that all non-breeding female cats be spayed before the age of 2 and ½.  In this procedure, the ovaries and uterus are removed to sterilize a female cat and there are several health benefits associated with spaying your cat before the age of 2 and ½:
  • The risk of developing breast cancer is reduced to 0.5% by spaying before 2 years of age.
  • Elimination of the risk of ovarian and uterine cancer
  • Hormonal changes of heat cycles may interfere with diabetes and epilepsy treatments
  • Prevention of unplanned pregnancies
  • Elimination of unsociable behavior
  • Elimination of heat cycles every 2-3 weeks
